Nov 09, 2009·If you are using 1/4 inch plywood, and you are going through 3/4 inch subfloor, I would go with a 1-1/2 to 2 inch screw. Make sure you predrill the hole through the 1/4 inch plywood, use a bit the same diameter as the outside thread of the screw. The pilot hole is generally the diameter of the shank of the screw.

Aug 31, 2012·According to the underlayment install tips: 1) Staples are "not recommended". 2) "Do not use drywall screws". 3) Fasteners must recess 1/16" below the surface, penetrate 75-90% of the sub-floor assembly, and not protrude through the bottom. 4) I would rather use screws than nails. So, for 1 inch of wood, 75%-90% means that I need a 3/4" screw.
Apr 15, 2015·Hello. I put down 3/8 ply underlayment over 23/32 osb subfloor. I already stapled down the underlayment with some porter cable 1/4" narrow crown 1" staples. I put the staples appx 2" apart on the edges and 4" apart in the field. After I stapled down the underlayment i saw in the ditra installation book that they say not to use staples.

If your choose this route, staples are a good choice to fasten the underlayment.Staples usually have a coating which help increase the holding power. Using a crown compression stapler, staple 2 inches on the seams and edges with 4-6 inches apart in the middle.

If you use adhesive for the underlayment, you can get away with fasteners every 8" using ring shanked nails. Using my experience, I would fasten the underlayment with adhesive and 7/16-inch crown staples every 6 inches driven with a pneumatic stapler.
